About this holiday
This Deep South fly drive begins in Atlanta and loops through seven southern states. You collect your car on day three and set your own pace from there. The route takes in Savannah, Charleston, Asheville, Nashville, Memphis, Natchez, New Orleans and Montgomery. Because the driving days stay short, you get proper time in each city.
Music runs through the middle of the trip. In Nashville you can walk Broadway, visit the Country Music Hall of Fame or book a tour of RCA Studio B. Memphis then adds Graceland, Sun Studio and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Further south, New Orleans brings jazz, Creole cooking and the French Quarter.
History sits right alongside it. Savannah and Charleston keep their antebellum streets and squares intact. Montgomery, meanwhile, tells the story of the Civil Rights Movement at the Rosa Parks Library and Museum. Asheville breaks up the cities with the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Biltmore Estate.

Your itinerary, day by day
Days 1 to 2: Atlanta
Arrive in Georgia's capital for a two night stay. The World of Coca Cola, the Georgia Aquarium and the boyhood home of Martin Luther King are all within easy reach.
Days 3 to 4: Atlanta to Savannah
Collect your car and drive 249 miles southeast via Macon. Savannah rewards a slow wander around its squares, antebellum mansions and restored waterfront warehouses.
Days 5 to 6: Savannah to Charleston
A 136 mile drive north, with time for Hilton Head or the historic district at Beaufort. In Charleston you can take a carriage ride or cruise out to Fort Sumter.
Days 7 to 9: Charleston to Asheville
Head inland 275 miles into the Great Smoky Mountains. Three nights allow a full day at the Biltmore Estate and another on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Days 10 to 11: Asheville to Nashville
Travel 296 miles via Pigeon Forge and Knoxville. Nashville offers the honky tonks of Broadway, the Country Music Hall of Fame and RCA Studio B.
Days 12 to 13: Nashville to Memphis
A 212 mile drive to the home of blues, soul and rock and roll. Graceland, Sun Studio and the Stax Museum all sit within the city.
Day 14: Memphis to Natchez
Cover 312 miles via Tupelo, birthplace of Elvis, then follow the Natchez Trace Parkway. Stop at the Grammy Museum in Cleveland and the B.B. King Museum in Indianola.
Days 15 to 16: Natchez to New Orleans
Drive 171 miles south to the Mississippi delta city. Jackson Square, Bourbon Street and a paddle wheeler cruise are all easy additions.
Days 17 to 18: New Orleans to Montgomery
A 319 mile drive into Alabama. Montgomery holds the Rosa Parks Library and Museum and the church where Martin Luther King served as pastor.
Day 19: Homeward bound
Drive back to Atlanta airport, drop off the hire car and board your flight home.
