About this holiday
This ten-night private tour takes you from the coast to the highlands on one of the most richly varied itineraries in Sri Lanka. You’ll start near the airport in Negombo, then move inland to Habarana at the heart of the Cultural Triangle — ancient capitals, UNESCO rock fortresses and a guided cycling tour through Polonnaruwa with a local primatologist. It’s the kind of history that doesn’t feel like a lecture.
The focus throughout is food, landscape and local life in equal measure. A farm-to-table lunch in Dambulla, tea with a retired planter in Nuwara Eliya, a picnic beside Diyaluma Falls — these aren’t add-ons, they’re the point. In the Knuckles Mountains, you stay at Gammaduwa Heritage Bungalow on an old tea plantation and hike remote trails between villages that see very few visitors. The pace is active but never rushed.
From Nuwara Eliya you board what is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful train journeys on earth, winding through tea country down to the relaxed hill town of Ella. Two final days here give you time to hike Mini Adam’s Peak, swim in hidden pools and take in views across the highlands. Return flights with Sri Lankan Airlines from Heathrow are included, along with all transfers throughout in an air-conditioned vehicle with your driver-guide.
